Why it began
Military service has been woven through my family for generations.
I am the granddaughter, daughter, niece, wife, and mother of veterans. I have always had tremendous respect for the men and women who serve our country, but it was not until my own daughter came home from serving in the United States Navy that I truly understood just how difficult coming home can be.
My daughter had served her country. She had done what was asked of her. But when she came home and needed help transitioning back into civilian life, finding that help was anything but simple.
Suddenly, I found myself trying to navigate an entire world I knew very little about: VA medical care, benefits, finances and banking, mental health services, paperwork, programs, eligibility requirements, and perhaps one of the hardest things of all, helping my daughter learn how to become a civilian again.
